While I was able to stave it off longer than most, it looks like franchise fatigue has finally kicked in for me when it comes to Call of Duty.Ĭall of Duty: Black Ops 3 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Between the terrible campaign, the weak implementation of split-screen, and the constant crashing, Black Ops 3 feels like a rushed job, despite its three year development cycle. I guess I just expected too much from this year's entry in the Call of Duty series. It's a shame too, because when the multiplayer is free of lag and manages to avoid inexplicably crashing on me – it's some of the best Call of Duty I've ever played. In my experience, the lag has been horrendous in more matches than it's not. The online multiplayer, unfortunately, has many problems as well. When playing in split-screen, words are basically unreadable, and split-screen also seems to cause the game to crash quite a bit, at least when it comes to the Xbox One version. Since the Black Ops 3's launch last Friday, I have had it crash on me a whopping 10 times, usually when trying to add a split-screen player to the game. While poorly implemented split-screen is still preferable to no split-screen at all, I'm left scratching my head at how Treyarch could've screwed it up this badly. Split-screen, by the way, is definitely appreciated – especially after Halo 5 lacked split-screen – but Treyarch botched it. The goofiness of this is made especially apparent in split-screen, as players have to sit and watch two versions of the same exact cut-scene play out on top of each other, instead of the game going to full-screen for such scenes like basically every other split-screen shooter ever made. The big draw for the campaign in this year's entry was the addition of 4-player co-op, but instead of playing as different characters, everyone controls the same character. This slog of a campaign is how players unlock the excellent Nightmares mode, so unfortunately it can't just be ignored like past Call of Duty campaigns. I am left bitterly disappointed.įirst of all, what were the developers thinking when they cooked up the campaign? The story is about as nonsensical as they come, and despite removing the "follow me" icon as promised, the levels feel just as suffocating as ever before. The game released to very positive reviews, which instilled even more confidence in me that Black Ops 3 would deliver one of the best Call of Duty experiences in years. Sadly, in my eyes, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is a flop. I greatly enjoyed Treyarch's previous work on the franchise, and had faith that Black Ops 3 could live up to my expectations, and perhaps even win back some lapsed Call of Duty players that had grown disillusioned with the series. Many Call of Duty fans were eagerly anticipating Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, but find out why one gamer considers it his biggest disappointment of the year.Įven in a year that gave us the likes of Batman: Arkham Knight and Fallout 4, I was still very hyped for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.
